Like all businesses, airlines need to differentiate themselves from their competition. They want to be seen in the eyes of their customers as unique and to compete on a level that cannot be commoditized. Embracing the idea of "innovation," Delta airlines is promoting itself as a company that fosters connections between its customers; a major trend that we are seeing across the industrial spectrum. One way they are doing this is through the expansion of a promotion called Innovation Class. Flyers are invited to sign up on the Delta site for a chance to fly while sitting next to a mover-and-shaker in technology, science, or the arts. Think of it like a mini mentoring program in the sky. Wannabe seatmates apply online: Select a flight, connect your LinkedIn Profile and your application is reviewed by the airline's panel. Oh yeah, if you're selected you will fly free. If you are the type of traveler who is not interested in talking to your seatmate while jetting across the country, this one's not for you.
